Family Feedback From the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Infusion

Even the First Generation Bred True !

Bunnie is a Standard with a tightly curled soft Wool coat.  Regardless of the color of the stud she is bred to, the majority of her puppies were  always Black.

I was  not concerned about color, but I did want to see if the IRISH Wheaten would help to thin out Bunnie's dense  high maintenance coat and loosen the curl.    I was also hoping for a more  elevated ear set to help increase the Australian Labradoodle's tendencies to ear infections.  Not expecting miracles I chose Bunnie also  for her compact strong conformation and the strength of the Australian Labradoodle bloodlines behind her.   It was important to me also, to maintain the heritage of sweet natured - love sponge - intuitive  Australian Labradoodles   and I was not disappointed with the results.  You can see from the following photos, that there was an impressive likeness in type throughout the litter.

A very big thank you to the families who took the plunge with me and accepted puppies from this groundbreaking experiment.  They have been very generous in updating me with the progress of their puppies.  You are wonderful !  It has been so helpful for my research.  Beverley

Update on Arrival  -  Temperament

Hi Guys
We thought you would like to know that Darcy is doing really great. He can sit, stand, drop, give paw and come now on command.

On Tuesday night we had a very bad storm, not a peep out of Darcy. On Wednesday ( 2 Feb 2005 ) during the day we had a very bad hail storm where our skylights were all smashed and hail was coming through the roof. Both our cars were damanged extensively and our solar system for the pool was smashed.

Through all this Darcy never made a sound and didn't seem at all alarmed. I can have him in the house when I am vacuuming and he doesn't take any notice of this. He has made friends of both our other dogs and he amazes us every day.

Soft Retriever Mouth

When my daughter Krista was going in to one of the aviaries in our back yard one of the cockatiels got out, first caught by my poodle. My husband got the cockatiel out of her mouth only to be grabbed by Darcy. My husband told him "no" and he dropped it. Much to our amazement the cockatiel is fine. When my husband put the bird back in the cage he looked at Darcy who had feathers all round his mouth but he hadn't hurt the bird.

The only problem we have with him is that unless someone sits in the back of the car with him he is car sick!! Any ideas on how to cure him? He does not seem to like the car at all - will not get in unassisted - the vet reckons he is stressed!! Favourite toys; mats etc are no substitutes at all even treats don't work! When he comes back home he makes a big fuss of the other dogs. Do you think he is associating a car trip with the one leaving all his family behind in Melbourne ?

Just the same he is fantastic. Thank you again for such an amazing dog.

Love Maureen and Brian M

DARCY  Four Months Old Update  -  Nature  - Behavior with Young Children

Our Darcy, is 4 months old now. His father is an IRISH wheaten and mother an Australian  Labradoodle, purchased at Rutland Manor.

He is the most placid puppy we have ever had. He was black when we bought him but he is now changing colour. He has some silver on his tail and it looks like I have put talcum powder on his back. Not sure what colour he will turn out but the nature is fantastic. I have never had such a well behaved puppy. He comes when he is called, or rather leaps to you with such long legs. He is a wonderful member of our family.  He is fantastic with my young grandchildren and even comes when they call him. He never whines, like most poodes do. In short don't be worried about the wheaton in the breed.

Five Month Old Update - Exceptional Trainability - Graduated 'Big Dog' Obedience !

Hi everyone
Guess what? I just finished my first obedience training course, not puppy training - BIG SCHOOL!! I had to do a heap of things. First I had to go up this big ramp and stand there while someone looked at my teeth and checked my paws and felt my tummy and I wasn't allowed to jump down or fidget. Then I had to walk on a loose lead without pulling and then the first time we stopped I had to sit, the second time I had to drop and the last time I just had to stand. Then I walked back. Then the next thing was I had to sit and STAY while my dad walked off and I wasn't supposed to move until he came back. Then I had to lay down while he did the same thing. By now I was getting tired!!

Just as well because then Dad tied me up and I think he must have had a cup of tea or something because he disappeared - I knew I was supposed to keep quiet so I thought I'd take a nap but some of the others made soooo much noise it was hard to get to sleep!! Dad came back eventually and gave me a big hug. What did I have to do next? Oh yes I had to go up to a gate and sit while Dad went through first then I had to follow him through and sit while he closed the gate - piece of cake!!

I had to go back to the car and get in - I thought we were going home so I went in quickly. I was supposed to stay there until dad called me out, and then sit while he closed the door, that was OK. I had to come when I was called then - but not before of course - and then had to walk through a crowd of people making heaps of noise. I was a bit scared inside but I didn't let it show!!    Didn't I have to do lots of things? If I failed even one of them I didn't get my certificate. But I passed everything so I GOT IT!!! WOOF, WOOF TAIL WAG!!!!!

The only thing was Dad forgot the Camera DUH!!! Anyway here is a scan of the certificate and a picture of me laughing at Dad who is struggling to hold the ribbon and the certificate. I hope you are really proud of me Auntie Beverley because I am only just over 5 months old as you know and it was sooooo much to remember.

Please give my brother Danny and sisters Colleen and Chevonne a big hug.

DARCY Update at Seven Months

Darcy is getting quite big weighing about 17 kilos (2.2 lbs to the kilo) and 19 inches at present. He still tries to nip my fingers especially when I want to pat the other dogs. He will have to learn to share me with the others.

He is great with the other dogs and great with small children. He is very laid back and doesn't rush much except for first thing in the morning when he goes psycho and runs around like a mad thing. We love him heaps. Maureen NSW.

Here are some pics of me at 7 months. I have just had my first wash and brush up at the groomers and she just trimmed up my face am little bit so I could see out! I also had her take some hair out from under my arms - which tickled a bit - and some off my tummy. There were a few matted bits there but everywhere else had no mats at all.

For all you folks that are interested in these things I am now 22-23 inches high at the shoulder and about 36 inches from nose to the base of my tail.  I weigh in at 21 kg or a bit over 46 pounds.  I have very long soft hair that my human sisters envy, and I am going silver on my back and a bit on the legs.  I have a small white blaze at the base of my tail.
Woof woof and table clearing tail wags,

from Darcy

Brian and Maureen are so impressed with Darcy that in 2006 they booked ahead for another puppy  also from the infused line in 2009 - this time from Darcy's litter sister Chevonne.

Bill and Cathy Schmidt in Delaware New York

LIBBY the Australian Labradoodle, came to the family as a puppy, from Rutland Manor, seven years  ago in 1999.    In 2004, age caught up with Libby's adored Golden Retriever playmate TANNER and he took his journey to the Rainbow Bridge.  Poor Libby was heartbroken and pining, so one day I ca

lled Bill and we spoke about Misty's Irish Wheaten infused litter of puppies.  Bill was enthusiastic and FINN  flew to Delaware where he is a beloved family member.

ZACHY -  Litter Brother to Darcy Romeo and Dandy
Lynne W  NSW. Australia

Thanks Lynn for the great feedback!  Beverley

He's an amazing little boy.

Settled into the car immediately with no  squeaking.  Moved from me to Lachlan and finally went to sleep.   Probably travelled for about half an hour and woke up with travel sickness.  Had him on a towel, just in case so all was well.  Settled again and then within 5 mins of home, sick again.  Poor little man.  Recovered quickly and wolfed a latish teaof cooked chicken, brown rice, silver beet and a dob of  yoghurt.

He has not wet the floor once day or night!  Put to bed in the laundry with a barrier across the doorway without a whimper and went  through the night until about 6.30am   Eats anything I give him from a whole bean to play with, to berries off the bush.  He has an appt on Thursday for his booster shot and boys know not to put him down.

Nature and biddability

He is so gentle and loving and needing to be with you.  We sat outside on Sunday night for a drink before dinner and Zachy wandered off to the designated tiddle spot for a tiddle.  On Saturday he was retrieving a ball and dropping it!  He sits nearly every time and stops if he's in trouble.  He has short, naughty moments where he goes nuts but wears himself out and then sleeps.  His fleece is growing by the minute and he is so soft. I'd better get some work done and will send more photos periodically

Regards Lynne

Five Months Old Update....

Thought you might like a couple of photos of my beautiful boy. He is a delight.

He's now 5mths old and has not been any trouble. Colour has not changed.

He eats everything he's given, yoghurt, fruit, tomatoes. I make up grated vegetable burgers that we call Zachy Burgers that he gets several times a week. Everything goes down the hatch and he is very well. Full of energy but has lots of space to run in.

Thanks Lynn !

Temperament and Nature

Dear Kas, Karen, Vicki, and Beverley,

Who taught this dog to kiss?  He is the most loving animal I've ever seen.
Kirby arrived at Orlando International at 6 AM yesterday.  We were there to welcome him.

He came right out of his crate to meet us. He is in great condition.  He is worth the long wait.  He has a little jet lag but he tolerated his journey very well.  He was a little nervous when his new Mum drove us away from the airport because he thought that she was driving on the wrong side of the road. :-)

When I explained that we drive on the right side in this country, he settled down and had no mishaps for the rest of the way home.
I was expecting a few problems during his first night here, but as you suggest, I put him in his crate next to my bed.  Every time he'd stir, I poked my finger into the crate and he went right back to sleep.  We got a full night's sleep and his crate was dry in the morning.
He loves our grandkids, and they love him too.  We're all having lots of fun.

Thank you Rutland Manor for sending us this great puppy.
Lew D.  Florida

Hello Beverley,

Kirby has been here for one month now.  He is a delight in almost every respect.  He was 14 inches & 15 lbs. on Feb. 3.  He is now 15 inches & 20 lbs.  He has been gaining about one pound per week.  I feed him raw food (Aunt Jeni's Homemade 4 Life)  He has had  more of an odor than I had expected.  I was giving him the raw lamb food.  A few days ago I switched him to raw chicken food and some days, raw rabbit and now the bad odor has disappeared.

I brush Kirby every day.  That job is very easy and takes just a few minutes.  I would say that his coat is very easy to take care of up to this point.  "It will be interesting to see what happens with his coat over the next few months.  Kirby's is beginning to silver (I am also  beginning to silver).  They say that dogs and their masters often look alike.  Kirby and I are beginning that process very quickly. "  Lew.

Temperament and Nature - Non aggressive - Gentle - great with young children

As far as Kirby's temperament is concerned, he is very gentle with everybody and everything.  He is happy to meet everyone.  Kirby has chased our cat, but only in an unsuccessful attempt to play with her, not to be aggressive.   He runs and plays with my grandchildren (ages 4 and 2).  He has never growled or snapped or showed any aggressiveness of any kind.  I trust him, however, I do watch him very closely when he is playing with the children.

Now that you have announced the Wheaten infusion, as anyone could have predicted, a few vocal people are upset.  I am not one to go on to any of the chat pages and stir up a hornet's nest, but as the owner of one of these puppies, I think that you have made a bold move in the right direction.  I am proud to be a part of the experiment.  You  have many  friends and supporters throughout the world.  Please count me among them.

Best regards,
Lew D & Kirby

These pictures were taken today.  In one, I'm doing my favorite thing, riding in the car with my dad.  I like to ride in the "shotgun seat".
The next picture shows how my coat is changing.  I keep getting lighter.  I've got no knots and my coat is still easy to maintain.

I am now 16.5 inches and weigh 25 pounds.  My adult teeth are coming in beautifully.
One evening each week, I take my dad to obedience school where he is learning to train me to be well mannered.
Grandma, I hope you have a wonderful day.

Grandma Beverley,
I'm six months old today.  I miss you and all of my friends at Rutland Manor, but life in Florida is good.

Best wishes,
Kirby

Thank you Lew for your updates and pictures ! .   Beverley

MOLLY - Daughter of Bunnie and Patrick
Fran & Butch W Boulder Colorado

Thank you Butch and Fran for the great feedback and the great story of Molly's arrival!      Beverley

With Becca & Chocolate Lab Nessie

Special Delivery with Butch !

Molly is safe and sound here in Boulder.  It was quite a journey...

Because of the low temperatures here in Colorado, shipping from Los Angeles to Denver was becoming a problem.  This combined with the facts that I am a pilot, own 1/3 of a pretty good twin airplane (Cessna 310), and don't need many excuses to fly, I flew to Hawthorne Airport (4 miles from LAX) to pick up Molly.  Elke of Pacific Pets dropped Molly off at the Hawthorne Airport, we played a little on the ramp (to the amusement of the controllers in the tower, as I found out on departure), checked over the airplane and flew for 4 hours back to Boulder.

Molly slept during the whole flight.  After landing, I taxied up to my hanger, shut down the engine, and got Molly out of the plane.  There was a little snow on the ramp, and Molly was very tentative as she checked it out.  It was then that I realized that January is the summer in Australia and Molly had never seen snow before.  Because it was a little cool -1 C. (30 F.) and it would take me some time to put the plane away in its hanger by myself, I put Molly back in her crate in the warm airplane.  She was not happy...but she was warm.

Fran, David, and our 5-year old Labrador, Nessie were at home to greet us.  After Molly arrived from Australia in Wednesday, our 20-year daughter, Becca, returned from a year in Israel on Thursday.  See the second attached picture of Becca, Nessie, and Molly enjoying each other.

Today, Friday, Molly got her checkup from our vet and is in good health.  We look forward to many great times with Molly and Nessie.

Butch

ROMEO - Another Son of Bunnie and Patrick
Charlie and Ginger New Jersey

Thank you Charlie and Ginger for the great feedback ! Beverley

ON ARRIVAL

It's been one week since "Romeo" has joined our family. We decided to call him Romeo as he is such a lovebug! Every morning we have our cuddle time, when we just hug each other. I rub his tummy and back, and I'm getting him accustomed to grooming and ear cleaning.

When we have visitors, he spreads his love evenly to all who are present. My husband Charlie has taught him to sit and come. We begin puppy training next week. Romeo has had only one accident in the house, but other than that he does all of his business outside. You did a great job with crate training. Thanks.

Romeo's personality is very warm, friendly, mischievous and fun. He has brought a tremendous amount of love and happiness into our home. As Charlie and I will not be having human children, Romeo is our first baby and we may even add another puppy baby to our family later in the year. We just had our first snow, and Romeo loved playing with it. I bought him a coat so that he would not get cold. See attached picture.

Thanks for sending us this bundle of joy! Words can't begin to tell you how happy we are with our Rutland Manor puppy. I still keep checking our your website to stay abreast of all of your Rutland Manor updates. Best of everything to you and the Rutland Manor Team.

Ginger S. New Jersey

Romeo was enrolled in a group puppy training class.  He was very distracted by the other dogs in the class and would bark at the teacher and other dogs, so we hired a private trainer . He loves "doggie school" .  He has learned all of the basic commands and is on his way to advanced training.  Romeo takes his training very seriously and performs with great pride.    He loves people and wants to kiss and hug them when he sees them.  We are working very hard to contain his excitement when visitors enter our home.  We're certain his enthusiasm will mellow with age. We have included pictures of Romeo over the past several months.

Thanks again for giving us this wonderful, loving and funny Labradoodle.  He's the Best!!!!

Thanks, Ginger

Nine Months Old Update - Romeo

We want to give you an update on our Romeo.  He is nearly 9 months old, weighs 50 pounds and is 24 inches tall -- and hardly resembles the puppy which we brought home from the airport this winter.

Romeo was almost black when he arrived and is becoming more silver every month.  His coat is soft and wavy with some coarse hairs.  His ears flap easily and permit airflow.  Romeo has a strong and solid build with a nice straight back and a somewhat curled tail.  Our friends think he is very handsome and always comment on his large white teeth and long eyelashes.  He stays very active chasing birds, squirrels and anything that moves.  He is not timid at all, but doesn't like the vacuum cleaner  or broom.    He loves cuddling, and getting his tummy rubbed.

Twelve Months Update: Romeo

Just want to send you some pictures of Romeo.  He is now almost all silver.  His personality is gentle and yet he is a sentinel in the yard ( chasing birds, squirrels, and anything that moves) and he loves looking out the window.  He weighs 50 pounds and is 24 inches at the shoulder.

I want to ask you about his coat. When his coat gets long, it seems he needs to be groomed every other day to avoid getting matted/ knots.  His hair is fine and wavy.  Do his brothers have a similar coat?  Do they need be groomed as often?  I want to let his coat grow longer and fuller, but when I do this if I don't groom him regularly, I have to take him to the groomer for a haircut. Any suggestions for grooming or letting his hair grow without matting would be greatly appreciated.

 Warm Regards,  Ginger

Thanks Ginger for the feedback.  With this generation we clipped the coat at eight months old and the new coat grew through thinner and with no matting.  Try that!  Beverley

Viktor's DANDY

Another Brother to Romeo and Darcy

Beverley, Here are some pictures of Dandy at 5 months. Just in case you forgot - he is number 3 from the Patrick-Funnie Bunnie litter.   Viktor

Temperament and Nature   Trainability and behavior with young children

"In my opinion Dandy is a wonderful puppy - very trainable and is very easy to live with. He is good with children and other dogs and my daughter (she is 11) has no problem controlling him. His activity level (on the scale from 1 to 5) is about 2.5 inside and 4 outside.   He is not timid at all, but, surprisingly, does not chase squirrels and birds - at least not yet -:).

In terms of the goals of the infusion:

Ears. The ears are set rather high and it seems that they do not obstruct the air flow. He does have a lot of hair in his ears but no ear infections so far.
Topline. Completely straight.
Frame. Almost square. At 5 month height 18.5'', body length - 19''.
Coat. Silky, initially straight, recently developed very loose curves.

If you have any specific questions about his temperament, health or appearance - don't hesitate to ask. I'd be more than happy to answer to the best of my abilities. Viktor

Thanks Victor for the great feedback ! Beverley
